Proper care of your woodlot can help yield higher volumes of sap and higher quality syrup. This can be achieved by selectively removing trees that are diseased, poorly formed, and declining in heath.
On occasion, some woodlots need to be thinned or cleaned. This increases growing space and makes other vital resources available. By thinning or cleaning your woodlot you encourage only the best trees to prosper and produce higher volumes and high quality syrup.
Sugar content and volume of sap produced can be highly related to the size and vigor of the tree’s canopy. A large and healthy canopy will in turn produce higher volume of sap and will have a higher sugar content. Therefore, thinning your woodlot by removing unhealthy or undesirable species can give each tree optimal growing space. You can greatly increase the quality and quantity of syrup your sugar bush is producing by properly managing your woodlot.
